SAIL Amsterdam 2025: A Grand Celebration of the Sea and History

SAIL Amsterdam 2025 is not just a gathering of sailing ships, but one of the largest maritime festivals in Europe, which will take place from August 20 to 24, 2025, in honor of Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary and the 10th edition of SAIL.

This year, the event promises to be especially grand: more than 800 vessels are expected, including majestic tall ships, naval vessels, historic replicas, and modern yachts from over 24 countries. Millions of guests are anticipated to join the celebration, and the city will transform into a large-scale open-air theatrical stage.

Main Events

  • SAIL-In Parade (August 20): The ceremonial arrival of the fleet, when hundreds of tall ships and thousands of smaller vessels pass through the North Sea Canal into the IJ bay. Starts around 10:00 AM and lasts until evening. This spectacle always draws large crowds of spectators along the waterfront.

  • Open decks and tours: Many historic and modern ships can not only be viewed but also visited. Sailors conduct tours, sharing stories about life aboard and ship history in a live format. Dutch vessels reflecting national maritime traditions are especially popular, and guest cruises and dinners are available on business and cruise ships.

  • Maritime fair, food courts, thematic zones: The shore will transform into a space for tasting dishes from different countries and viewing exhibitions of maritime technology and souvenirs. The entire city will be divided into zones — or “oceans” — each with its own activities, including musical concerts and shows.

  • Evening shows and fireworks: Every evening the program concludes with a multimedia show — lights, music, illumination, and traditionally, fireworks over the IJ.

  • SAIL-Out Parade (August 24): Sunday is the farewell parade when the entire fleet leaves the city, returning to the open sea. Starts at 14:00.

Iconic Tall Ships and Participants

In 2025, many famous vessels will be present:

  • Tall Ships: Amerigo Vespucci (Italy), Gorch Fock (Germany), Shabab Oman II (Oman), B.A.P. Unión (Peru), Christian Radich (Norway), Belem (France), Alexander von Humboldt II (Germany).

  • Iconic Dutch ships: Kamper Kogge (a replica of a medieval cog), Eendracht, Clipper Stad Amsterdam, Loth Lorien, Pedro Doncker.

  • Modern and naval vessels from various countries, historic replicas, private and corporate yachts — a total of about 800 participants.

  • Not all ships are open for visits — accessibility information is published on the official event website.

Organization Features and Tips

Booking and Accommodation

  • Accommodation: During SAIL Amsterdam, the city expects hundreds of thousands of guests, so from winter almost all hotels, apartments, and B&Bs near the IJ bay are actively booked. It is wise to seek options as early as possible — this ensures not only comfortable lodging but also the best views of the event. Rooms on upper floors with panoramic windows are especially in demand.

  • Alternative locations: If the city center is no longer available, consider the districts of Zeeburg, Noord, or even neighboring cities (Haarlem, Almere) — from there you can quickly reach the venue by public transport.

Where to stay: a selection of hotels and alternatives
For romantics: Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam (with a view of the IJ).

For families: Mövenpick Hotel, near the waterfront.

For budget travelers: Stayokay Amsterdam Zeeburg.

An alternative is to book a houseboat or Airbnb in Amsterdam-Noord.

Transport and Movement

  • Pedestrian zones: The center of Amsterdam and the IJ waterfront temporarily become pedestrian-only zones. It is better not to try to drive into the center by car — parking is either unavailable or must be reserved in advance and is expensive.

  • Public transport: Trams, metro, and ferries over the IJ run on enhanced schedules and can be crowded, especially on parade days. A bicycle is a convenient option — the city is adapted for cycling, but even then be prepared for crowds.

  • Water transport: Private boats are allowed only with organizer permission and strict compliance with safety rules to ensure the safety of the fleet and spectators. It’s better to use special viewing “flotillas” or rent organized spots onboard.

Accessibility

  • For visitors with limited mobility: Organizers emphasize accessibility — many places are equipped specifically for people with disabilities. Information about special routes and assistance points is available on the festival website.

  • Age recommendations: SAIL is a family-friendly event catering to guests of all ages. However, young children and elderly people might tire from long walks and large crowds — plan rest routes in advance.

Safety and Order

  • Restrictions: Along the waterfront, special spectator zones, emergency services points, and first aid stations operate. It is not recommended to climb on technical platforms, bridges, or piers outside specially organized points.

  • Large backpacks and bags: During SAIL, as at other mass events, bag checks may be carried out at access points to event zones. It is better to bring only minimum necessary items.

  • Weather: August in the Netherlands is often changeable: from heat to rain. Take sunscreen, headwear, and light raincoats.

Tips for the Best Experience

  • Best viewing times: The most beautiful moments are morning and evening hours when the ships are illuminated by the sun or lighting effects. During the day, focus on tours and shore activities.

  • Plan meals in advance: Numerous street food kitchens and fairs operate during the festival, but lines can be long. You may want to arrange a picnic with a view of the water or book tables at restaurants overlooking the bay in advance.

Tickets for IJ cruises and SAIL evening shows

  • Where to buy tickets: Official tickets for river cruises and special tours during SAIL Amsterdam are available on the website sail.nl. The schedule of parades, shows, and lists of ships open for visits are published there. SAIL shows and waterfront events are usually free, but tickets are required for thematic cruises, private boats, and restaurants on the water — it’s best to buy them in advance (many categories sell out weeks before the event).

  • Lovers Canal Cruises: One of the largest companies offering special SAIL cruises (day and evening) on vessels with panoramic windows and classic historic boats.

  • Stromma Nederland: Operator of SAIL cruises with additional programs, family tours, and private boats. Usually releases a separate SAIL program a few months before the event.

  • Blue Boat Company: Guided and audio guide tours, thematic cruises for the SAIL-In parade, and walks during evening light shows.

  • Amsterdam Boat Experience, Flagship Amsterdam, and others: smaller private companies often renting barges for friend groups or corporate parties.

Important: During SAIL, waterway licensing applies — book only through official partners listed on sail.nl or Amsterdam.info.

  • Official website SAIL Amsterdam — full schedule, news, event maps and ticket links: sail.nl

  • SAIL App Amsterdam (official app) — interactive map showing current ship positions, program times, push notifications about weather and crowds, ticket purchase options, and filters for shore activities.

  • GVB — Amsterdam public transport app for navigating the city during SAIL.

  • 9292 — route planning service for the region, including ferries and suburban trains.

Practical list: “What to take with you” for SAIL Amsterdam

  • Binoculars — to see details of tall ships, orchestras, and water activities from any distance.

  • Panama hat / cap and sunscreen — August can be very sunny, especially on open water.

  • Light backpack — for water, light snacks, and souvenirs (large bags may be refused at entrances).

  • Backup battery or power bank — lots of photos, videos, maps, and using the SAIL App quickly drains battery.

  • Clothing according to weather:

    • windbreaker or waterproof jacket (wind, spray);

    • comfortable shoes with non-slip soles — many walks on piers, decks, and cobblestone streets.

  • Small bottle of water (preferably reusable; water refill stations available).

  • Light snacks — queues at street kitchens happen, and watching the parade with a sandwich is a special pleasure!

  • Sunglasses — the IJ shines under the sun, especially at midday.

  • Charged phone with installed apps (SAIL App, GVB) and, optionally, a camera.

These tips will make the festival not only vivid but also as comfortable as possible — because the details of organization set the tone for unforgettable impressions from the start!
