Tragic Case in Belgium: Ukrainian Teen Confesses to Killing Mother and Sister
On the morning of Friday, June 6, 2025, a fire broke out in a residential building in Hassrode
(a district of Oud-Heverlee, Flemish Brabant, near Leuven, Belgium). Inside, firefighters discovered the bodies of a 46-year-old Ukrainian woman and her 6-year-old daughter, both with multiple stab wounds.
Forensic experts confirmed that the fire was deliberately set — an attempt to cover up the brutal attack.
The Suspect: 16-Year-Old Son
At first, authorities believed the teenage son was at school during the incident and not involved.
However, after further investigation and questioning, the boy confessed to stabbing his mother and sister to death, then setting the house on fire.
He was unable to clearly explain his motive. According to the Leuven public prosecutor’s office,
the 16-year-old will appear before a juvenile court on Sunday, June 8.
Family Background
The family arrived in Belgium in 2022 after fleeing the war in Ukraine. The father is a soldier
involved in evacuation operations and remained in Ukraine. The family lived in subsidized housing provided by the local church in Hassrode. Tragically, the family dog also perished in the fire.
Official Response
The Embassy of Ukraine in Belgium is closely monitoring the case. Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the case is under special supervision, as directed by Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
Conclusion
The teenager, initially considered uninvolved, admitted to the brutal murder of his mother and sister and to setting the house on fire. The motive remains unclear. The Ukrainian embassy is providing support and tracking the investigation closely. This is not just a criminal incident — it’s a deep tragedy that resonates with Ukrainian families across Europe.
